Can anyone parse this for me? Last week's New Scientist Cryptic 8 down 'Preload expanding speed gun technology (7,5)'. The answer is doppler radar but I can only see an anagram of preload as part of it. Where does the rest come from?

Is a speed gun called a radar?

No. Doppler radar is one method used in speed cameras.

Ok. I thought the answer was technology and speed gun was the radar element of the answer. Sorry couldn't be more help.

This is a letter bank clue as indicated by “expanding.” You get DOPPLER RADAR from using “preload” as a letter bank, anagramming and reusing letters as needed.

Thanks, SaraG - there was another thread on this (I don't know why!) and the 'expanding' stuff was given and discussed there.
