Well 5d is a thing of beauty! Imagine setting a crossword and realising this is possible.

Nice quick solve but the green tick is remaining elusive so I must have an error somewhere.

Never heard of the drunkard meaning of 6a before.

Hi Nicola, hi FemmeNoire,

5d is indeed a great clue.

6a - Didn't J R Ewing famously call Sue Ellen this? I think it was "you're a drunk a ???? and an unfit mother" Wow!

easy cluing but well-made crossword - things one never thought of like 5 and 26, already pointed out. Pity 20 didn't write 11 - would have rivalled my favourite play title - Henry Livings's Honour and Offer ...

I completely agree about 5d. Who knew?!!

Found this on the easy side today, particularly the bottom half. 20a was hardly a cryptic clue with the inclusion of 'wrote The Birthday Party'. Why not just have 'Top hard radical playwright'?

All good fun though.

On grandparent duty today so, while they play, turned to this and surprised myself by knocking it off in double quick time. Lots of good clues but have to agree about the brilliant simplicity of 5d. Anyway, better get back to helping Grandma now!

This was the easiest Everyman of the year, for me at least. 4d and 26a were last to parse. The solutions were clear enough from the crossers and wordplay.
Tx, Brendan for explaining the Spoonerism. As I've said before I never get them. Penny eventually dropped on 4d - on the the better Cockneys.
Merry Christmas and a safe New Year all.

Thanks Fop, a

As someone who grew up and lives in east London I do get a bit frustrated with these Cockney stereotypes and I would complain but, in truf, I just can't be bovvered 😉

Good morning, I also liked 5 & 6 although they were both write ins. I thought 19d was very nice as I hadn't seen the previous clue mentioned

I'm afraid I don't like 4d , it just doesn't work for me. I'd actually give it wooden spoon of the day if it wasn't that the primarily always gets that. And I can't see 26a even with the hints. I can't parse 14d either, so must be missing something.

But overall a nice Everyman

Hi Warden,

14d - Is quite tricky - 2 letter "in France an" then a 5 letter "dated" goes around/'admitted' a 3 letter "sin" - definition is "sold short".

Quite straightforward this week I thought.
I’m pretty sure of 17a, but can’t seem to parse it. Can someone help?
Thanks
