Repeating thanks to entrants...I had trouble selecting a phrase and was doubtful about this one, but forum members bailed me out by submitting more brilliant clues than I can list. Apologies and no slight intended to anyone not mentioned. It's been a delight to read through the clues.

Bronze: spike2's tricky subtractive anagram @35 Producer of wordless novel? No! God willing (5,6), plus several others;

Silver: mattrom's topical Harry Kane clue @13 and brilliant hidden @11 Director selected actors on, well ... esthetics (5,6), standing out over several others;

Gold: buddy's topical anagram @27 (I'm not a stickler on anagrinds), narrowly awarded on volume due to numerous high-quality clues.
Once-decorated director must sell rosé now (5,6)

Also worthy of mention:

ginge @31
paul's chess theme @9
patrich @22 and 17
aristo @28
jono @10, 6 and 5

Cheers to buddy, repeating thanks to entrants for inspired work!

Prizes to follow shortly.

Congratulations, Buddy for the gold.

Also to Mattrom for the silver.

Thanks, Geeker, for hosting and for the bronze medal. I have to say I'm absolutely bowled over! Completely unexpected.

Prizes [I'm a big fan so can't include seriously irreverent clips]:

Othello - arguably not so coherent, but I love the photography. Note the Bishop's mitre providing chess content: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yG8N9U_1SU

BBC Kane interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKra6_NAey8

Latter-day TV career: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrGlWAFy1LU

ITV series I never heard of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kMNNUUt9YA

Well done, buddy! Enjoy.

I was tempted to do something with early eighties punk band !Action Pact!, whose first album was called Mercury Theatre -On The Air (which I have).

Probably too obscure.

Well, knock me down with a feather! For those who did not get the reference in the clue:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orson_Welles_Paul_Masson_advertisements

Welles was widely mocked in his later years for these ads, during many of which he was apparently drunk off his, er, ample behind. How the mighty had fallen, etc.

Thanks to geeker for the challenging comp and the first prize. Interesting set of clips - I first heard of Orson Welles from the wine commercials, didn't see Citizen Kane till college (1980-ish) and just recently watched Third Man on TV. I saw Citizen Kane ($1 movie night at U. of Illinois!) with a roommate, who, 10 minutes into the film, blurted out "Oh, I bet Rosebud is his sled!" More than a few people in the audience were ready to commit homicide.

Congratulations buddy and the other medal winners. Many thanks geeker for a tough (hard to find different ways to define the ‘boy wonder’!) but fun challenge … and for the mentions.

Congratulations, buddy! Thanks for the mention, geeker. Neat clips. Quite the Bergmanesque Othello, eh? I remember those goofy Paul Masson ads, made when Orson was as big as a house. He really did some embarrassing things in later life. I rather wish he’d done Nero Wolfe!
