Still struggling with this "little" monster and am just wondering about one answer at the moment, and that's 39 Across "Fabled wolf lives for one month around Rhode Island".
I have ----R-M (7 letters), and on consulting my list of fabled wolves, I see that the answer could possibly be MAUGRIM. I can see "AUG" (August) in this, and, of course, "RI" for Rhode Island, but with only "MM" remaining, this doesn't tie in with "lives for one month". Do I have the right wolf?

Puzzled by 17a. Clue reads: Latest thing the Speaker’s cut? (4)

The letters I have are M - D - The answer looks as though it ought to be MODE, which could be “latest thing”, but how does the rest of it work?
