I'm sorry to report that there's an announcement in The Times today that Anne Bradford, author of Bradford's Crossword Solver's Dictionary, died on Saturday at the age of 90.

Hi, Anne Bradford is my Grandma. I've used this site for years to help with clues that I was stuck on (when I was kind enough to give Grandma a break from helping me over the phone). She was that good; she would be on the other end of the line, a blank sheet in front of her (she didn't have access to the same crossword), and I would tell her the clue, the number of letters, and anything on it I might have solved already. It didn't take her long to provide the answer, and unravel/educate me on the cryptic route for uncovering it. She taught me some of the art of cryptic crosswords (I wish I'd learnt more), and instilled and nurtured in me a love of the English Language (that I will continue to pursue). I'm glad my Aunt will continue her work, and I hope to lend a hand in days to come.

It really is quite something for me to go on a random internet site and discover examples of others who benefitted from her work and love of cryptic crosswords (just as I did). I'm so touched to see these messages and acknowledgements of the positive impact she had on others experiences of this pastime. Thank you for taking the time to recognise her and offer your condolences. It means a lot.

Whilst she was small in stature, she was an intellectual giant. She was (and remains) an incredible woman, a role model, and a much-loved Mother and Grandmother; she is dearly dearly missed.

MB that is a very touching post - everyone on this site will be thinking of you and your family in condolence.

I have written to BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour in the past to ask them to consider examining the history of women and crosswords, Anne would be high up in any such story.
