....and how does kiss (buss) come into it? Didn't seem like a good clue to me.

5a could possibly be an &Lit (literally so) where the whole clue is the definition ? Buss is an alternative (though obsolte/less common) spelling of Bus (omnibus)

Thanks jazzgirl.... it's such a strange clue with a lot of conjecture. Certainly not a satisfying clue.

Buss is a verb as well as a noun; heartily is lustily.

So to kiss - to welcome lustily - about SPA to make an & lit, as per jono, seems fair.
