Jono @16, I'm not sure, but I think no. Yes, the every four year rule applied, but the Gregorian calendar introduced some modifications to that, so 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, although 2000 was. Additionally, to adjust for past inaccuracy, when switching from Julian to Gregorian the date was jumped ahead by 10 days. And of course to complicate matters further, various countries adopted the Gregorian calendar at different times, although that shouldn't affect the year 512 question.

Actually, now I think you are correct, Jono. I should know never to doubt you. There were 1500*365 + 372 - 10 days between January 1, 512, and January 1, 2012. (The 372 is for the number of leap years.) This works out to 0 (mod 7), so both were the same day of the week, and we know that was Sunday. Jono for the win!
