S?P?? Is it sepia? I can't see the 'irrational'.

PI is the irrational, surrounded by SEA (deep)

If thou art making money thou earnest thy salary

I'm not convinced by the equivalence of frank and earnest!

How does pi mean irrational?

Pi - 3.142 etc. is an irrational number.

I also had to look up to confirm SPECTACLED OWL, TOE LOOPS, SUPERNAL, EPARCHY, HYADES, EMERSION.

Simplest definition of an irrational number is that it cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Even so, I did not like the use of the word irrational (an adjective) alone to signify pi (a noun) in the clue.

Reminds me of a joke, along the lines of…

Pi said to i, "Get real!"
"Be rational!" says i…
e intervenes saying "join me, and we'll become - one!”

(Yes, that’s a negative sign)
