S?P?? Is it sepia? I can't see the 'irrational'.

How does pi mean irrational?

Pi - 3.142 etc. is an irrational number.

17ac: I saw = eyesore? Not in my vocabulary.

I also had to look up to confirm SPECTACLED OWL, TOE LOOPS, SUPERNAL, EPARCHY, HYADES, EMERSION.

Simplest definition of an irrational number is that it cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Even so, I did not like the use of the word irrational (an adjective) alone to signify pi (a noun) in the clue.

Reminds me of a joke, along the lines of…

Pi said to i, "Get real!"
"Be rational!" says i…
e intervenes saying "join me, and we'll become - one!”

(Yes, that’s a negative sign)
