hi jono
i'm not even convinced i have the right answer, but i could get mine just by removing i from a word that might describe Everyman; but there must be a much simpler way to clue the instruction to do that.

Like others, I also struggled with 14, and came here for help in the parsing. From what others have said I assume it must be:
- take a five letter word for what Everyman is an example of
- the "I" and the "S then are removed ("is going")
- then add an "S" (speechify opening)

Seems strange to rmeove an "S" then add one back, but that's all I can think of

Surely 14a is just a contraction of “Everyman will”, i.e. is going to, followed by the S? Where Everyman is just the first person

quisling's parsing gives a different answer than minty's etc!

It does, Chrise! I do like being in a minority 😉

Quisling. I got the S by using last word in clue to suggest a 1st letter of another word

On 2nd thoughts - I like Quislings parsing and answer.
The answer seems to fit the definition better than mine

I think mine is ok, Chrise. Misfortune is listed as a nounal definition of the singular, and I have seen the plural used. I think removing I and S separately from the five-letter word meaning assumed name, only to add the S back, is a stretch too far even for Everyman.

i suppose so, quisling, but i'm not entirely happy with singular/plural clash, despite your justification!
