26 Just a double definition, I think. A phalanx is a bone and also 'a solid body of supporters' , from Chambers , so fits '{a} set with a common purpose'.

Could 17 just be that Sacre-Coeur and Sr Sulpic are Paris Churches, churches in Paris, with an H for husband entered? Parish Churches, other places of worship.

8 D, Exeunt means 'they leave', they go out, and you'd learn this in a Latin class, lesson.

26 Is the clue definitely 'initially', not 'essentially'?

Iceni, old people. ICE is in the middle, essentially, of Precious and then NI is In reversed, 'turned in'.

That's all I can come up with - and it doesn't account for the 'stones', so could be nonsense!

Mathprof... I'd been working with that thinking too - but didn't know what the 'initially' was doing.

I think initially means that ice goes before in turned.

Thanks, Mathprofrockstar, that works - it seemed a rather fiddly clue for such a little word!
