Could it be NOBLE?
bon is good in French, and le is the, but I don't see how it works. "The great" is loose as the definition, and I don't see what the "some rules" contributes. Also LE shouldn't be reversed.

On help sites recently I've seen one or two Skeleton clues which have featured a hidden element as just part of the wordplay. I believe 'some rules' is intended simply to indicate a bit of the word RULES, in this instance the third and fourth letters. I'm not keen. At all.

I’ve only ever seen ‘bit of’ as referring to a first letter. I don’t even like that but random letters in the middle is a definite ‘no’ from me!
The definition was weak too, so not a good clue.

You won't like this one from last week's Skeleton then...

Result of putting some phones back on charge (5) - first letter E.

I agree that it makes 'bit of' for the first letter seem quite mild.
