OK folks a very interesting split of votes reflecting a very high standard of clues. Thank you all for your great contributions

In joint third place on 5 votes each we have;
Dorrien 11, Buddy 12 and Geeker 31.

In joint second place on 6 votes each we have;
Dorrien 7,Tyke 22 and Mattrom 32.

However by a nose we have an outright winner on 7 votes with Paul H’s superb 14;

“Diplomats vote to deceive”

That would have received 3 votes from me as well!

Your prize is inspired by your clue - when diplomats mess up;

Well done again Paul – quite an achievement against such stiff competition!

Well done to all the Pauls and thanks to the various votes from the various voters. Tyke, not sure I was being sporting so much as recognizing the obvious fact that your clue was much better than mine.

Thanks for my 7x1 votes - definitely a case of primus inter pares; I don't think I would have won under the Wed.-Fri. voting system with a clue that I thought wasn't as imaginative or amusing as some. Anyway, the kind comments are much appreciated.

Coincidentally yesterday's Times had: Being smarter than officer, initially labouring to fix gun (9). It was my last one and I had O-T-O-I-G. Solving in bed at night I quite like to have a couple unsolved when trying to go to sleep - better than counting sheep. Unfortunately I realised almost immediately after lights out that the last three words of the clue are an anagram. Should have got it ages earlier.

Thanks for hosting, Paul. A fine centenary edition.
