The rubric says that the unclued lights include two pairs. I have found five individual unclued lights and one pair of unclued lights, so as far as I can tell the last pair of unclued lights must be 19D/36D or 36D/19D. However, Chambers and my edition of Brewer are no help here.

Helveticus, 19 D (and its partner) are definitely in my 19th edition Brewer's. 36 D isn;t involved, you need an earlier Down entry.

6d & 19d (in that order) represent a (very obscure) pair to be found in Brewer.

What puzzles me is the final letter of 2d. (Current power of a philologist/4).

I haven't done the puzzle, but Jean-Jacques Ampere was a philologist.

Spoffy: True, but it is an unfortunate red herring, I think. I parsed it as A + an abbreviation which is in Chambers.

No luck with solving 6D/19D. I have tried splitting 19D into two words at all possible places, but the penny refuses to drop. Doc and his love affair with Brewer...

bunty: thankyou so much! I had led myself astray, as I had a different letter at the beginning of 6D to give a word which, when preceded by the common word, is unfortunately an entry under the keyword in Chambers. This completely led me up the garden path. Doc + Brewer = :-((

Helveticus, glad you got there in the end! As you had Brewers, I thought a re-reading of the relevant section would be enough for you to finish off the puzzle.

Thanks bunty, but I was at EITHER AMPS OR AMPA - without being able to justify either. I'm still in the dark.
