You’ve missed ‘pie’ - which is part of the wordplay - open-topped, four letters.

Else U for united, but the definition is hardly a common word.

No, Grimalkin, it's a much rarer word - Triturated! It has Tried, attempted, with Tart, pie and U, united, inside (gobbled).

Grimalkin, glad I could help. I hadn't checked the definition in Chambers, but it's fine - the word means 'to rub or grind to a fine powder.'
