Old salt's not entirely old secret (4) DE*R It can only be DEAR or DEER but how would either parse?

I think that there is a factual error at 6 down.

I respond as head of Jewish seminary accepting answer. The solution is REACTOR, but the BRB gives RECTOR as head of a Jesuit seminary!!

Bobby... doesn't 'accepting answer' mean that you put A into the head of Jewish seminary, and get someone who respoinds?

I think the error is in the definition, Jewish vs Jesuit

From Chambers: salt is archaic slang for dear, and dearn is archaic and dialect for secret.

Thank you all. Hadn't thought of checking BRB for definitions of SALT. Will I ever learn after 50 years of solving? I think not!!

Sorry, bobby (and thanks, Jono), I hadn't realised the problem was with the seminaries.
