Another gentle, but satisfying, ride after the even gentler EV. My pdm was “Clock” which I got immediately after “Bug”, so more than a bit of a hint!

Yes, it was easy, even if it didn't seem so at first. Once one has the first of the twelve italicised words, it all falls into place, and I even did all of it (bar one clue) in a hotel room without a dictionary. I didn't like the three-letter clue either.

Errr - am I being dim? The only entry form for this crossword is the normal numbered clues! Are we just supposed to write the answer to the clue and forget about fitting the answers into the grid? If so, what was the point of the numberless grid???

Hi Tintin, I guess the only point of the grid was to give the crossers (which I certainly needed with the American President's... clue). Otherwise, yes, redundant.

Complete except for clue "This is before Italian smoker's given up". I have A?T? Would be very grateful for any help to solve. Thanks in anticipation.

uncle w - Italian smoker is a conventional clue for a volcano in Sicily.

As often happens I have just figured it out.
