The Guardian crossword editor missed a howler in today's quicky (and it could have been so easily fixed).

I think a couple of clues were misprinted in the paper version, later corrected online

Initially the grid could only be completed and verified with a misspelling of ESCUcOS (for the former Portuguese currency) crossing with cARRY ON. Much later on two different clues were substituted so that EXCEeDS crossed with eARLY ON.
For the life of me I still can't see how the error came about because a clue had been 'edited' but that was the reason given.

For interest, from today's Enigmatic Variations...

29 D. First nine letters sent back: that's very small amount (4)

I don't need the answer.

I aesthetically prefer the Guardian's cluing, but go for the Times here because the "encyclopedic" device is rather common in crosswords. See for instance malone's post just above.

Thanks, Malone. This clue is certainly getting recycled.

Mathprofrockstar, maybe it's the times we're living in - things have to be re-used, recycled and nothing whatsover can go to landfill?!

Given today's EV clue at least we can definitely say who played it worst.
