14 across: Maybe half-hearted pariah is to survive (7}. Answer seems to be outlast, but why? I can see this being to survive and nearly half-hearted outcast, but I am clearly missing something. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Roger

Odd coincidence. I wouldn't have seen this if the same idea hadn't come up in a different thread very recently. C (100) becomes L (50)

Possibly not a coincidence - it's another Times puzzle.

Yes, funny to see the same ploy used in two puzzles.

I’m with Chris on this. I only figured it out by remembering from a previous puzzle. Even then it took me a moment.

Tough puzzle for me. Three UK place names that were unfamiliar to me. Worked out two from the word play, but in 26 it was part of the wordplay. I only got it after I had all the crossers. After Chambers, my map app is my most valuable tool.
