I first attended a test match in 1959 at Lord's when India had to open their innings late in the day and face Fred Trueman bowling flat out with May, Cowdrey et al fielding in the slips halfway to the boundary. First time I'd seen a proper fast bowler from the side view. Made me gasp, as TV in those days filmed only from behind the bowler's arm and you didn't appreciate the sheer speed of the ball.
