Gridfill a bit easier than usual with Mr E, but even with the song and the letters forming the prefix what to do next is far from clear. There are groupings of the participants in various numbers, but the number which the song seems to want are not symmetric, so I must be missing something. And the last bit - the non-participants - is deeply unyielding. Still, the clues were fun ...

Was equally nonplussed but it all suddenly became crystal clear.

Only missing item is parsing of 26 - a mystery to me

Agreed Tatters. Think I know what 26 is getting at but not convinced it works although I could just be wrong.

tatters - my interpretation was to think of the greek letter at the beginning, and that makes it "called over" nicely. Still gazing at the grid though.

I found that all became clear in 26 down when I thought of Keith as a place rather than a person.

Enjoyed that. Thank you Mr E. Quick canter and a beer after winning our bowls match this evening. Rounded it off nicely.
Slight late confusion over an Americanised spelling, but all became clear.
