Could it be ThreeD, fully formed effect? The 'train of thought' could be 'Thread', with the E in the middle of 'her' (central to) replacing the A, acting.

PS This could be nonsense!

Thanks malone - I'd forgotten that Azed never warns us of hyphenated words, so rejected 'threed' as a a nonsensical past tense.

I came here to query that one! I could only see THREE-D but no idea of the parsing. Malone's theory is kind of plausible, but would make it a very weak clue.

Given that the above is correct, I am left with another query at 20 across. Humble cashier (6) DE*OTE.

The solution can only be DEMOTE, but it would be a really iffy double definition.

My thoughts as well Bobbycollins. For me cahier means dismiss rather than just demote.

I'm amazed that these got past the editor. 'Cashier' doesn't mean 'demote', and the THREE-D clue is, to put it mildly, very poor.
