Thank you Jazz Girl and Orson - I must invest in a good Dialect Dictionary as the new compiler for this puzzle is using a lot of such clues.
I still have two remaining which are stumping me :
Ryedale's watery source (3) I have no letters

Eclipse of the moon (5) ?n?a?

any help welcomed.

Ryedale's watery source could just be RYE (the river)

Good to see you Chris ! I rarely post as there are quicker and more knowledgable solvers .
Although I was Wiltshire born and then moved to Dorset and now Surrey, I have Yorkshire roots way back in 1600's (Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Darley, Otley .....) and have come across these dialect words in old wills.
