ST 4964 16d was

Old car cleaner, you might say (8)

BROUGHAM

From which I learned two things:

It's a car as well as a carriage.

It can be pronounced 'broom' - just when I thought I could get malone stirred up.

Paulhabershon, that clue educated me too! I'd never heard the word pronounced - and was glad that I'd never needed to say it, I'm sure my version would have been wrong. Oh, I've just checked Chambers and read that there are three acceptable pronunciations.

Although I often moan about 'sounds like' clues, my irritation this weekend was for two words well past their 'Use By' dates. . I don't think there is any new way to clue Trendy and Frightful/Rightful has been done to death too (along with that one's close relative, Lawful/Awful).

I did not get that one. It was getting late anyway. Now I need to pick up the puzzle again. Thanks, Paul.

Thanks much, tatters. I’m disappointed I didn’t get it because I love her. Not familiar with that use of turn though. Performance, yes, but not performer.

Sunday Times obviously doesn't have same rule as The Times - never using living person as a solution.

A previous post mentioned Giscard d'Estaing. The Times slipped up. Yes he was old, but not yet dead.

Am having difficulties with the parsing of 1 dn and 15 dn.

1dn Top US sporting figure (6, 3)

S _ L _ R _ / C _ P

Am thinking SALARY CAP but find the clue very thin

15dn As one appears in lounges, often? (9)

R _ G _ L _ R _ Y

Looks like REGULARLY, which can mean often, but other than that I don't get it

Any suggestions?

Thank you Stevie. That's pretty oblique; I doubt I'd ever have seen it!
