I am soooo! glad this amazing person has been recognised by Serpent. As someone who used to do this particular thematic, I'm flabbergasted at the one-place demotion because it was "deemed inappropriate"!!

Thanks to Serpent for a cracker of a puzzle:-)

PS.

9a - Deal with lake’s faulty flood management device? (5)

I have the answer but can't see where the T comes from (deal?) and I see the 'food' but don't get the "management device?" part.

Rather impressive career. A new name to me and I'm intrigued as to why the technique was inappropriate. Can you imagine what would've happened if they'd demoted the 'flopper'....'I say, old bean, you can't go over backwards, it's, well, it's not normal!'

Puzzled by the parsing of 32d, any thoughts?

Hi Granama,

I know, can you imagine it - I truly hope it wasn't because of gender.

32d - take the ends of (well of)F and A(rea) from the beginning of a word meaning "legendary" and you have your answer.

Ah, got it. Cheers.

Only the Azed left this weekend. Might have to start doing the Saturday Guardian puzzle again!

I have to confess to previous ignorance about the subject, but Serpent introduced it in a way that no prior knowledge was necessary. Quite an easy puzzle by this setter's standards, but hugely enjoyable - neither of which adjectives apply to another of this weekend's barred puzzles, in my opinion...

Brendan. I don't understand your one-place demotion reference - would explaining it be too much of a spoiler for the puzzle?

Hi Loge, for the 4a - she went over head-first which was deemed "inappropriate" hence she was demoted to second!!!

Thanks Brendan - found a reference. Seems like even back then the word "inappropriate" was used to personal agendas!
