Okay I know it's past the closing date but whenever have I been up to date?I'm stuck on the last one at 1d, Therefore, river sounds like potatoes. (5). I have _A_T_ and for the life of me I can't see it. I even went through QS but couldn't see anything that fitted. Someone put me out of my agony folks. Pleeeeze. It's probably a Dog! moment.

Saute, a way potatoes are cooked. It sounds like So, therefore and Tay, river.

Omg. Thanks Malone. I'd gone through SO & ERGO etc and even the TAY was in the rivers I went through. but sauté just jumped past my eyes as a run of the mill cooking expression. For instance last evening I sautéed sausages a onions for a pasta dish a then sprouting broccoli in oil with garlic & lemon juice. Not a spud, Murphy, tattie, etc in sight!

Dandybandy, glad I could help. I think tatties are the most usual thing to be sauteed - I always look out for them on restaurant menus. Your meal last night sounded lovely, but would have been enhanced with a few potatoes (sauteed or otherwise)!-

That's got to be one of the worst clues I've seen for a long time! Apart from the meaningless surface reading, the position of the "sounds like" is unhelpful, suggesting the potatoes are the homophone rather than the answer. And with equally unhelpful checking letters, I'm not surprised you didn't get it, Dandy. I'm not sure I would have either.

I used to do the RT puzzle before I left the UK in the mid-2000s, and I'm sure the clues were of a higher standard than this.
