Typical... as soon as i post i have 5d!

Got the parse of di vin e now too.

I finished the crossword this morning (the final clue was 6D), and I still didn't understand where the hint was. I knew what it must be, but I couldn't find it. I think I have it now, from one of the comments on this site, but it's very vague.

Xwordfan: look for a list of famous saxophonists on Google.

Thanks, henkeeper, for the heads up on the position of the thematic hint. I'm so glad that I worked out how to enter down solutions myself early on as it greatly helped to solve many of the across clues. This "hint" seems anything but! Went to bed with only 17d to crack, having all the elements of the solution apart from four letters for 'mountain'. ETNA didn't fit so I trawled through a list in Wikipedia—did you know there's a Mount Massive in Colorado? That's like a physicist discovering a subatomic particle and naming it 'tinyon'!
I woke up with correct term for 'mountain' in my head...

I am stuck on 6 down. I have crossing letters of I I R T V so assume there must be a third I? Am I wrong somewhere and if not help with identifying the trio appreciated.

Thank you xwordfan. If I had remembered my Latin O level from 60 years ago it would have made my clue solving easier!

I'm stuck on 21 down - I'm assuming extremely brave is BE but just can't work out the rest! Any help please?
