I’m new to this puzzle. Can anyone help with 8A - We cannot stay fully associated when axe gets lifted. I have TAR?S. I’d also appreciate the parsing! Many thanks in anticipation

I think the "axe" is a (Fender) Strat so that reversed/lifted world be Tarts - people who change their allegiance so "cannot stat fully associated"

I came here to ask precisely the same question and found that diver had beaten me to it. Thanks, brendan, I should have cottoned on to that!

Actually not too fierce for Paul McKenna. Managed to finish without aids, all my guesses being correct, apart from the above.

For info, diver, Paul is the most difficult of the Mephisto team. Don Manley the most accessible, with Tim Moorey somewhere in between.

I've got a Tele but both my brothers play Strats - that combined with "tart" (with the same meaning) forming part of the answer and wordplay in this weeks IQ and I'd say I got a bit lucky:-)

Hi brendan. I threw in the towel with the Inquisitor - I just wasn't on Phi's wavelength. That happens now and again - sometimes with pretty easy ones. I managed a tricky grid fill with the Listener, but got nowhere near the endgame. Now for Shirley's (Chalicea) EV 😃

I promise you Ken, the EV is much easier and every bit as enjoyable:-)
