Agree with all the praise. Teeny niggle for me - I can't place the necessary extra E from the first 9 letter down clue.

As it happens I didn't need to have gone through the performance of following the instruction since I had googled the story when the penny had dropped. Nice to confirm that I guessed what it would tell me though.

I have LATE?E but can't work out what the last letter is as I am stumped by the wordplay. Anyone care to enlighten me?

An elegant puzzle. Talking of which, please could someone put me out of my misery by parsing the Armchair clue (in which I assume G as well as N is superfluous, leaving ELEAT, but cannot fathom where the OVE fits in - from covers, somehow perhaps) ?
