I was initially daunted by the preamble. But it was much more accessible than I thought it might be and the grid fill was most pleasing. I was definitely in the zone with this one. A lovely puzzle. Thanks Phi.

I stared at the end game for quite a while until I twigged how the clashing letters worked, and cracked a broad smile.
AS Merenz says, it's not quite as daunting as it seems once you work out how it -um - works, and the initial impression of a long cold-solve slog rather dissipates as all three sets of clues interact.

Yes, very enjoyable. Wasn't going to bother with the 18 cells but they just leapt out at me. Back to the rugby!

Finally finished after the SE corner had me struggling for longer than the rest of the whole crossword. After reading the preamble I did think this was going to be a lot more difficult than it actually was. The cold solve element was just about right before you could start to fill the grid. As someone who can closely associate themselves with 13a, I can say that I am certainly not a fan of the theme, but I do recognise their talent.

Thanks tatters. As others have said, not as daunting as it first looked but plenty tough enough for me. Well constructed and very satisfying.
