I have all the theme words, but Im stuck on parsing 42a (Deduce why the batsman's dismissed, 9, two words) and 38d (Brother's nose, ten times bigger at the front, 4). I can take some pretty decent guesses, but only by ignoring what look like significant parts of each clue - which is naughty.

38. Monk, brother. It was Conk, nose, with the C multiplied 10 times to give M, using Roman numerals.

Thanks, Malone, but I am still foxed by 42a. I know what it is, but am finding it hard to seethe batsman!

It is a cricket reference to the batsman being dismissed/out.

Yes, thanks, but it's the rest that's puzzling me.

You may have got this sorted out already, Peter, but I thought the definition was 'deduce' with 'why' giving you the first word and 'batman's dismissed giving you the second.
But I am open to correction.
