toads are much less aquatic than frogs - indeed, one of the favoured habitats of the natterjack is sand-dunes!

Hi chris
But they do breed in ponds and mine was the only pond anywhere near. The toad lived in a damp place near my house, which I've since dried out for the sake of the wall.
And I have a degree in zoology! ;-))

rosalind: She doesn't actually dislike them; it was just the element of surprise. There was a similar performance the only time we've ever had a mouse in our house, but when I'd cornered it behind the firescreen around our woodstove and she saw it looking up at her she said, "It's adorable!"

yes, they do need water to breed, but otherwise it's not particularly important. having said that, our frogs are found much more often in the long grass than the pond!

aristo- and she's quite right, they are adorable. Once I rented a flat above a garage in the countryside and did nothing about the mice until one ran over my bed while I was in it!

Well done, BBM2, and thanks to Rossim for the challenge and the clips. Thanks also to Tyke for your vote, and to Chrise, Jono and Dorrien for the mentions.
Unfortunately our introduced cane toad has been a disaster for much of our native wildlife. They eat anything that moves, and much that doesn't.
