Gracious man's act of self-harm, one roughly involving initiation in rites?

The solution is MYSTAGOGIC but I cannot fully parse. Presumably MY = "gracious" and IC = "one roughly", but the middle bit escapes me.

STAG - man (only)
OG - own goal, act of self-harm
