Yes, letters are right. An extra letter is clued . Het UP should give you the first three letters.

I agree Brendan about reading up on the various themes of these puzzles. Most of my general knowledge has been gained from doing crosswords, not just general knowledge ones. What I did know before the current EV appeared was that the father in question here was the sixth Baron of a town very near to where I live.

I agree with the general sentiment. Excellent puzzle, fascinating subject.
