Thanks, syz. I've got the grid filled out but I'm a bit bewildered by the blanks. Some of them are obvious but others not, and it isn't clear to me whether something further is to be done with them. I'll ponder for a spell though...

Very many thanks syzygy; as we've discussed elsewhere it takes a while for the penny to drop with what's required to fully explain the thematic clues and confirmation of 20a, lovely touch.

It finally occurred to me, although a couple of them still haven't registered. Most ingenious. I think my favorite (recent favorite anyway) from these setters was the epistolary one, with the clues all run together.
