Thanks to all for the comments and hints. As an ex teacher, I'd like to point out that the organisation referred to in 7a has not existed for some years!

It's an unmentionable word on the golf course around R for river.

Likewise Chrise. Early on I thought the theme might be golf which inspired me to go out and hit lob wedge shots in the garden on a lovely sunny morning in this part of Hants. Managed to hit 40 shots without an unmentionable as per 19d. Great puzzle which I couldn't quite finish until I read the forum and discovered the real theme.

Hi everyone

I'm sure I started to write a reply to you all, but I seem to have lost it.

I started well with 9ac, 7ac and 3d, but soon ground to a halt after that. I'm blaming my cat, who has been a pain and my lack of knowledge of golf or chess. I'm guessing these are the themes.

I've read through all the threads, but not got many answerss a result. If there are 18 theme words that leaves us seven that aren't. I think I need some not so subtle hints for a couple. What about 10ac? I have E???????P.

I don't seem to see lots of the anagrams, eg 13ac. A hint for 20ac would help. I have B????

Help please

Hi Roof.
I've just finished it myself, with much help from the forum.
10A doesn't end in P. You might have 6D upside down.
I've not fully parsed 10 but it begins with 2 letters for old and 2 for church; definition is Trades.
For 20A think of a 4 letter term for Shakespeare which includes (eats) a symbol for nothing; definition is Meals
