Most of these I've either got the answer from the definition or part of the cryptic clue but I'm struggling to fully understand some of the clues so any pointers appreciated
1) Closely connected room east of renovated marina - ARM IN ARM (get the anagram of marina, unsure where the extra letters come from)
2) Punish students in passage - GATE
3) Artist in London area touching old woman? I'm tickled! - RAINBOW TROUT (Understand where rainbow comes from, not sure about trout or the actual definition)
4) Principle that is barely followed - NUDISM
5) Jam makers live north of church in market town - WISBECH (church -= EC? Not sure about the rest)
6) I roundly criticise religion - ISLAM

Hi Kribens,
5. WISBECH, market town. Assuming it's a down clue, so 'north' means 'on top of'
The women's institute (WI) were famous for making jam, BE = live, + CH, church. Not sure about the S
6. I + SLAM, roundly criticise, = ISLAM, religion

1. ARM IN A RM
In an across clue, east means on the right hand side. RM is an abbreviation of 'room'.
So it's an anagram of 'marina' + RM

2. is a double definition. A student can be 'gated' (confined to school grounds) as a punishment, and a gate is a passageway.
3. TROUT is a somewhat derogatory term for an 'old woman'. Google 'tickling trout'.
4. is a pun - nudists would be 'bare'

Hi Mattrom,

I wonder if the clue actually read "jam maker's" rather than 'jam makers'.

No, that doesn't sound right either - it would have to be plural.

Brilliant thanks, I was just seeing the cardinal points as representing individual letters

You are welcome, Kribens. Of course, the next time they come up, they probably will just be letters....
Hi Brendan,
I hadn't allowed that there are many 'Women's Institutes', so it works if it refers to more than one.
