Two tiddlers, the last two Down clues, I'm not sure about:-
22 Down - "What's essential to distinguish, in this clue" (-I-T)
Is this GIST?
23 Down - "Chap's going to the pit" ((-E-L)
Loads of 4-letter words to fit these spaces - just a matter of
finding the right ones!

Many thanks, Malone. I had several possible answers for each in mind, but the two you've given are obviously the best ones!

Parallelogram, that has come up before- but Chambers confirms the words can be pronounced the same. Earn/urn and my version, Earn/Erne.

1ac American, say, has zero chance to lose face (10)

I got OCCIDENTAL and can see the definition is at the beginning but can't get the rest.

Help much appreciate.

(A)CCIDENTAL) = chance - lose face = remove A
replace with zero (0)
