Just starting out with cryptic. Whilst I have the answer to this (agrippa) I've no idea how I should have gone about getting it. Any explanations appreciated

Hi Mbw,
'was reported' means that the answer is a homophone, so 'Agrippa' supposedly sounds like 'a gripper'.
