Devout priest overlooked in past (5)

I have ?I?U? and answer is almost certainly PIOUS (Devout), but am struggling to see the complete word play.

Presumably it’s REV overlooked in P(REV)IOUS

I think it's PREVIOUS (past) minus REV(erend), though whether a reverend and a priest are quite the same thing is a moot point.
