manxhatter

Had a few issues today With three clues where the subsidiary indicator and the answer had one letter swapped between the two. The swapped letter was always on an unchecked square. Couldn’t decide which was the definition.
18a. Changing sides at first, English radical is one joining a party (8) REVELLER / LEVELLER
43d. Rulers elevated emissary is lower in rank (8) RELEGATE DELEGATE
47d. Kind of crisis with replacing learner who makes deliveries (7) MIDWIFE / MIDLIFE
I used the first word in each case - your thoughts?

I think I would agree with 18 and 47
No idea on 43 - I don't see how the "Rulers elevated" indicates "replace D with R"..

I was clutching at straws a little bit with 43 but felt that I needed to get from delegate (emissary) to relegate (lower in rank).
Thanks for your response

It should’ve been ruler’s with an apostrophe. Sorry I missed the apostrophe out (Predictive text missed it out!)

Thanks all for the clarification

Had to cheat to get this one, which I don't understand.
51d Tip for tippler: one soft drink and a wine (5)
Apparently the answer is 'rioja'.

Thanks Malone I would not have got 'soft drink' = oj, and also thought that 'tip' would apply to the start of a word not the end, in the way the the tip of a spear is the start of it.
