Thanks, Malone. I wasn't thinking of that tot, and I'd never heard of the saw. That enabled me to see where the 'from' word went, and I then struggled over the line from there.

Phew! That gave my Chambers apps a thorough work-out. I spent longer parsing some than solving them and only got some of them parsed knowing what the extra letter was.

Can I have a tip for my final across clue, 14a. Fasten band to brown layers (6). So hard with no crossers confirmed!

3 letter synonym for brown (last letter is the extra) after 4 letter word for band ( more usually record or cassette/video) layers is the defn

Thanks xwordfan. I now have full grid but no penny drop moment, largely due to several missing extra letters from the across clues. Like 16 and 33 etc!

Thanks both, all complete now. I had the last four letters, but my knowledge on that is poor, I thought that particular event happened in ????AN. Apparently that’s in the same area but wrong.
My knowledge on the two final amendments is not poor! So got those promptly.
