14 Bumper, glass that's filled. Bum = behind + Per = rep, agent, reversed (back).

12 down must be RETE (network) in G OX (strong as an ox)

Looking at these clues makes me glad I decided life was too short for Jumbos some time ago!

I have three answers which I cannot fully parse, These are :-
44 Down - "Don't put an X rating on the spot" ABSTAIN (something to do with film ratings, I imagine, but I can only think of B movies in this case)

52 Across - "Stateswoman we'd understand an important member of the opposition?" AQUINO (as in Cory Aquino of the Philippines)

49 Across - "Take in cable, with height not constant" HEAR (maybe some connection with a mathematical constant?)

AB is a naval rating, STAIN is the spot. Definition "Don't put an X" meaning "not vote"

49 I think is a word for "cable" with the first letter, a physical constant, replaced by H. The best I can come up with is GEAR, as G is the Universal Gravitational constant, but I don't see the link with "cable".

Thanks, Chris E - "take in" may also be EAT, of course.

I think 49a is HOAX. Take in = hoax. Cable is co-ax (co-axial), replace c with h (height, not constant).
