Thank you for the posting advice. I did wonder about there being an easier way! Thought I was finished with the puzzle - after all I was doing a favour for my sister in Scotland. We are at loggerheads over 68 d.

ratings = evaluations, take away l for 50 and add c for clubs creating evacuations = retreats. However are they looking for the definition of ratings or retreats i.e. evaluations or evacuations? The grid is no help.

68d I think your logic is correct.
Fifty sent away suggests remove the L from eva(L)uations and replace it with C from (C)lubs to give you eva(C)uations.

Thanks again. My sister is now totally confused. I think the clue could have been better composed. I suggested to her that she photocopy the entry and send in two submissions. She told me that they will not accept copies. I think they realize they would lose out on the sale of an additional paper.
