Well done, mattrom. I'm used to 'baby shower' (antenatal affair) in the UK but haven't come across 'bridal shower' (much more tasteful than our 'hen party'), though maybe I am behind the times. Anyway, dorrien's helpful definition link meant that I had no problem voting for your excellent clue. Thanks for your vote for me; from you that's more like an accolade.

Thanks for the mentions, Chrise and jimmygtal, and thanks for the hosting, dorrien. I enjoyed the pear review (presumably discussed at a conference) and at least the typo didn't appear in the main thread title. 🤭

The Lake Superior circuit is on my bucket list but sadly not this year, Aristo.

Tyke, I thought I had got away with it!

Gosh! Thank you so much to chrise, aristo, buddy, FJ, jono and the 2 pauls for the votes and mentions, and to jimmygtal, spike and tyke for the mention.
Dorrien, it was a great word to clue. I hope I can come up with something as appealing next week. I enjoyed the clips - what a beautiful world we (still) have! As we are, after all, upside down here, there is this

Chrise, I have admiration for those who construct crosswords, as it would take me a year to do one.
Paulh, Pre-Covid, the brides here would have the Bridal Shower, the Rehearsal Dinner! and the Hens' Party as well. Getting married is quite an expensive business.
Cheers till next week.

I've always said that the length of a marriage is inversely proportional to the cost of the wedding. Several years ago we went to a wedding on the top floor of a skyscraper overlooking Boston Harbor, with a chamber orchestra, the works- had to cost at least 150K. I told my wife that I gave the marriage three years, and I was right on the money.

Thanks and many apologies, Aristophanes. Don't know how I missed your like, especially as I knew Chrise was on the rack already.

New Year resolution: write down the names, don't just try to memorise them before posting.

You might know the `Pedant Police` would be waiting to pounce! Hosting the competitions can be a stressful task - I hope you didn`t take offence at my little joke - the main thing is that everyone taking part has fun! .. I seem to recall reading about`The Pursuit of Happiness` somewhere?

Mattrom

I`m pleased you have a kind word for `Professional Setters` - sometimes I think we complain about the quality of their clues too much ... but we all know how long it can take to create a really good one - my best ideas seem to arrive at 3.00 am !
