Oh yes, Happy New Year to all. We were all in bed by 10 last night, though some people let of fireworks at 12.

Great clue, paulh. Busy week for you, dorrien! Thanks so much for the vote, mathprof. By the way, I read a lot of Native American history and it's remarkable how many books in that field are published by your university press. Makes sense of course, although that's heartbreaking. Imagine Seminoles et al being forced to move to Oklahoma.

Happy New Year, all. Gearing up for the Rose Bowl...

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for all the likes, votes and kind comments. They've certainly given me a happy Jan. 1st and I wish everyone a good year ahead.

Thanks for hosting and for the clips, dorrien. What a gulf there is in most sports between the good club players and the top internationals! I used to run the school chess club as a teacher, and a colleague ran the table tennis. Both games were suitable for children to play against adults in the local evening leagues, much to the children's benefit in school matches against opponents who hadn't had the same opportunity.
