Can't work out whether the ST has made an error or whether I'm missing something and was wondering if anyone else had had the same issue.

16ac Mates start so badly as dinner hosts (12) Toastmasters.

The problem comes with the down clue that crosses it - Lead off dance with solo song. That's a bloomer (8) which I make wistaria (ie twist without the opening letter followed by a solo song). But surely the climber is spelt wysteria. But if you spell it correctly then the clue doesn't work and toastmasters becomes toastmesters.

Any advice appreciated.

CHambers gives:

wistaria /wi-stāˈri-ə/ or more commonly wisteria /-stēˈ/

correctly wistaria - named after the geneticist wistar - often incorrectly wisteria; never wysteria!
