1D - Can't decide between the variant spellings(in both directions)for the unchecked letter - does Chambers give C or K or both?

28A - Hoping "lee" is a poetic word for river - googling not helping me to confirm this

46A - Are the carriages a female garment?!

Thanks sudokulover (and K). That was the "tipping" point.
Rather clever orientation of the unclued lights. The vessels go across, as the subject matter goes down to the 48A! Haven't got 22A yet.

28A thought "toxic" meant "leer", but need the X for the quotation. ??
46A - I just went with the obvious horses. Can't quite fit the carriages.

Arabas would be carriages if you had 2 alphas (As)?

1D - The answer appears to be more commonly spelled with a "C" at the end but the meat is usually with a K but can also be C , hence my doubt - if Chambers only has one spelling listed for either word then the doubt is removed.

28A - Toxic is definitely the extra word so if Lee was poetic for river it would fit nicely.

Ty Dja - I was looking for arb as a carriage - lol so not bra then!
