A bit late acknowledging how much I value the odd explanation here that led me to the denouement! Thank you. Great fun.

Enjoyed that but was rather fortunate that the right side and lower right fell out quite quickly so I had the perimeter and unclued in before most of the left side of the puzzle. That certainly helped complete the puzzle but feels a bit of a shame to solve the end game first!

Not quite finished.....just have intersecting pair 4d and 12a to complete, can someone give me a steer?

Lumen, for 4 D the 'rays' are fish'. You need some of the first letters...

There was a hint earlier for 12 A.

Do you mean post 10 and 11?
My 12a doesn't end in 'otum', unless I've gone very wrong!

Sorry if that confused you! I couldn't think of much of a hint for 12 A. If you added 'otum' to the entry, you'd have a child's toy, game.

The five letter answer would be 'relishes', a slightly unusual definition of a very normal word.

Thanks again malone. All done.
I was ignorant of that meaning at 12a, and also of the toy I'm afraid!
Also got 4d now, I can't see why the first letters of 'tan, knight and earl' change order though. Or why the clue contains the word outside.
Funny to see sneezes and stingrays featured in both my crosswords today!

S(un) followed by T(an) [with K(night) + E(arl) 'outside'] ending with lord(S).

...sorry about '...otum' - pentlandsound already had the answer and was only questioning the wordplay (but I should have seen the possible confusion).
