Another beast of a puzzle. Hats off to anybody who can crack 4 across.

A siciliana could include this, con potenza (ma non forte) (8)

**A***Z*

First letter possibly S and fifth most likely O - but they will be subsiduary questions in the unlikely event of the above being illuminated.

If your S and O are correct then there is a cheese that fits and would make the clue &Lit perhaps and all the letters are in there but I’m not entirely sure how it would work...

Yes, it’s SCAMORZA, an Italian cheese that one might see on a Siciliana pizza

Wordplay is SCAM is “con” and ORZA is Forza (potenza) without the F (forte)

Brilliant!

I had siciliana as a dance and hadn't twigged the pizza connection. I had toyed with the cheese and dismissed it! Didn't see the "con - scam" connection but had seen the need to lose the "forte" from potenza. Just not enough grey cells to put it all together.

Which brings me to a couple of parsing queries:

Points in Ascension Island necessary for southern islanders - S*N*T*
I have SENITI but can't parse.

Pet needs area for centre of attack - D*A*Y - I have DEARY but don't see that either

Ken, glad I could help. My last post was from my phone, and I didn't notice my typed Senit becoming Debit!

Great stuff, Malone - I was blinkered on E&N as the points

Think Pet is def as in the affectionate term and replace centre of DECRY (attack) with an A (area)

Thanks, candledave - you're absolutely right. I had dismissed decry = attack as decry didn't seem a suitably strong word, but having had another look in the BRB it is strong enough.

Thanks again, ken.
