Thanks to all for a fantastic response. Fascinating to see the range of ingenious devices employed. By my reckoning, there were 34 entries from 16 setters. There were a clutch of entries with one vote apiece, namely Paul@16 and @17, BBM2@15, mattrom@36 and tyke51@26. Just ahead of them was Fieryjack@10 with 2 votes. But there is a 3-way tie for first place with Rossim@11, and PaulH@28 and @29, which gives me the unwelcome task of deciding the winner.

There really is little to choose between them. Each of the clues is terrific and each reads beautifully. After much head-scratching, I’m going to go with PaulH@28, because I like the clever use of Victoria cross (though would have preferred a ? at the end) and Paul also had one of the other joint winners. That seems fair to me. Sorry, Rossim.
